The Making Of My Mrs. Meyer's Maker Submission

Thursday, February 11, 2016

Have you ever had a project where you felt like you gave a lot of yourself, and got pretty vulnerable?  I have a few of these over the years, and I would say one of the biggest ones lately was my Mrs. Meyer's video.  I knew a lot was at stake when I was making it, and got pretty stressed out about it, because I wanted to make something terrific.

In the weeks leading up to the submission date, Adam and I combed through the finer points of the rules, wrote a kind of preliminary script, rewrote it about 15 times as we discussed ideas and inspiration, shot and reshot scenes, looked at inspiration videos on youtube, sketched DIY ideas, bought materials for our DIY that we didn't end up using, talked with parents about the project, and baked a lot of cake.

Basically this project took over my life, and kind of unnerved me.  I had to answer the questions: "What inspires you" and "What does Mrs. Meyer's homegrown inspiration mean to you?"  I spend hours thinking through these questions and digging deep inside to find the answers.

There are some obvious answers to those questions, but I wanted to create something really meaningful. I hope I was able to visually capture at least a snapshot of what inspires me: cooking, being outside, and spending time with my family.

I decided a few weeks ago to make a video about my submission video, sharing some of the funny stories behind making it, some awkward outtakes, and answering a few questions that some of my friends had about it (like "can your cake stand actually hold up your cake..."?).  Maybe you had the same question.

It is no secret that I really would love to win this contest, and would absolutely appreciate your vote! A few people have asked if I know where I stand in the contest, and I really have no idea.  Voting is only part of the winner selection process, but my guess is that it is a pretty important part.  At this point, I just vote daily and wait to find out.

I do feel like we did our best, no matter what happens.  I guess I have to say that, in case I don't win, but really, we put forth a ton of effort, and here's for hoping it pays off! Even if it doesn't, it has been a really fun contest, and I feel like I learned a lot about making video from it!

You can vote daily until February 15th.  It takes about 10 seconds, unless your internet connection is slow. Just click the heart next to my name (Landen M.), and it will save your vote.  No sign up required.  Click here to vote!

  3. I've been voting as often as I remember! I loved seeing all the submissions, but I couldn't help but wish there was a male homemaker among them! If one of us were ever to stay home (and be happy doing it), it would definitely be my fiance. Maybe in 50 years :) Good luck, I hope you win!

  4. Thanks, Saskia! I really appreciate the votes!

I also thought it was interesting that they didn't choose any men. I watched dozens of the original submissions, and I don't remember seeing a single male submission, so there may not have been many to choose from. They work with Maxwell Ryan from Apartment Therapy and Paul from Sweet Paul Magazine, so they are obviously not against choosing a man, but maybe they just didn't get the male applicants that fit what they were looking for.

I know there are some killer homemaking men out there and I think they are planning on doing this yearly (?), so your fiancé should totally apply next time! Especially if he is the gifted homemaker in your home :)
