The Great Christmas Surprise of 2015!

Wednesday, January 6, 2016

Christmas time is such an good time to spend time with family and friends.  It just feels so right.  Last year we had to stay home because Fox was due the week after Christmas, and until last year we had been switching off between Adam's family and mine for the holidays, so this year we weren't quite sure who to visit.

We saw both of our parents a few times during the year, and will see my family a few times next year, so we talked about going to Salt Lake to visit Adam's family because we may not get to see them next year.  We went back and forth about the best thing to do, driving, flying, going, and not going.  Finally after much deliberation, we decided not to go anywhere, but to spend Christmas at home in Austin, again.  We broke the news to Adam's parents, who were pretty sad that we weren't going to be coming.

Then, the next day,  I got a text from Adam saying that he really thought we should go to Salt Lake, but that we should surprise his parents by just showing up.  Normally I would be against just showing up at someone's house to stay, but they were really hoping we would come, and Adam's parents are the most flexible and kindest people, and we knew they would be thrilled, so I said yes, and the preparations started.

It was fun to talk with them a few days before about their week, knowing that we would be showing up in a few days.

We had such a fun time trying to keep the news from them and anticipating their reactions.  Their reactions were better than we could have hoped for.  Tears, delight, excitement, and joy!  Check it out in the little video that we made!

Also, I am planning on making lots more videos this year (the goal is at least one per week), so stay tuned for more fun videos!

  2. This is such a fun surprise! We did the same thing last year when my husband's dad turned 60. We flew to Idaho and when we got to their house they were at the store, so we hid in a bedroom and left our kids in the living room and they were so shocked! Those are seriously the best surprises!

    1. Haha! That is fantastic! We considered doing something like that, because Adam still has a key, but this worked pretty well, too! Plus, then his aunt (who drove us to his parent's house), could take part in the surprise. She was super excited :)

  3. Well done, Landen!! Your in-laws used to Home-Teach my grandparents so I know them really well, and I'm positive you can surprise them like that anytime you want. :)

    1. Oh, how fun! I knew you had been at church at the same time as us before, but I didn't realize it was your grandparents who lived there! How fun! They are wonderful people. And yes, they are totally the type to be able to just show up and they would be thrilled!

  5. This was so fun! Love the video! I bet it was Adam's parents' favorite Christmas present. Plus it was fun to see Adam's street...and the SNOW.

    1. The snow was totally magical! Fox didn't quite know what to think of it! I loved it! And it snowed on Christmas, which was really awesome.
The song is by a group (?man?) called The Fisherman. I had an incredibly difficult time choosing a song for this one, and when I finally settled on this one, I hadn't really listened to the lyrics, and was thrilled that they talked all about love! I thought it was perfect for this video! Here is the link to the song: https://soundcloud.com/the-fisherman/do-you-know.

  7. what a great surprise! I surprised my mom a few years ago with a visit and got it on video (i couldn't surprise my dad because i needed a ride from the airport). Great fun. Where do you find your music for your vlogs (what's copyright on music for vlogs?). I'm asking in general for music-- music you already own-- free music somewhere?

    1. So far, I have always used music from the website SoundCloud. If you search Sound Cloud, creative commons, you can see music that is free for commercial use, and can be used as long as it is sited. Adam originally found The Fisherman, but most of the music I use comes from him.
