My Capsule Wardrobe Summer 2016 + lessons I learned while creating a capsule wardrobe

Monday, June 6, 2016

"You can make any article of clothing work with the right ______ (accessories, pants, shoes, hairdo, etc)".

I fully believed this way of thinking in high school and college.  Now, as an adult, my views have changed drastically.  I currently subscribe more to the idea of finding your own style and purchasing things that fit that style and look fantastic on you, even if it means owning less.

I first heard about the capsule wardrobe a few years ago, and felt sort of claustrophobic just thinking about it!  It sounded so restrictive!  Then a year and a  half ago, when I was pregnant with Fox, I wore basically the same thing every week for about 4 months, and I was surprised at how much I liked it!

I had gotten a number of maternity specific clothes that all worked together and fit in with my style, and I wore them again and again without getting tired of them.  I often hear from pregnant mothers who they can't wait to pack up those maternity clothes, but I kind of missed the consistency of my closet during those months.  That is when I first started to think about a capsule wardrobe.

But then, I kept thinking about the stress of deciding on one style (I have always camped out between two or three styles), and the expense of purchasing a bunch of new clothes, etc.  It all sounded like too much effort.

I am not sure what the motivating factor was for me, but a few months ago, I decided to bite the bullet, buy a few new things, and try out a capsule wardrobe.  After all, it seems to fit my minimalist lifestyle pretty well. Here are a few things I learned from putting together my first capsule wardrobe.

5 lessons I learned while making a Capsule Wardrobe

1.  Don't think of it as a destination, think of it as a journey.  You don't have to keep this capsule wardrobe forever, and three months is just not that long. Pick some things that you really love right now.  If you don't love them later, that is okay, but pick things that you feel great in now.

To begin,  just look in your closest and take out all the things you really feel great in.  Put everything else in a storage box and put it away for a while.  Then take a look at the pieces you love and start from there.

2.  Buy second hand.  I have gone in and out of loving second hand clothing.  A lot of times it smells or looks dirty.  But because I purchased a number of items for my capsule wardrobe, and my husband is in school, I was not interested in buying new clothes.  I found a lot of great pieces via a clothing swap and ThredUp.

3.  Go for neutrals, but add a little color.  I remember looking at Caroline's capsule and seeing that she had a red top for one season.  That seemed so brash, with all her neutrals, but it ended up being a beautiful statement pieces.  I chose clothing that would work well together, but I also picked a few fun colored pieces, and they have been some of my favorites.

4.  Pick clothes for your lifestyle. A few months ago, I was talking with Adam about what a capsule wardrobe is, and he mentioned that the nice thing about it is that it can be whatever you want it to be. It is easy to pick clothes that work for someone else but that don't work for you.  I had to be super careful that I was choosing clothes that really work for my lifestyle as a mom and frequent cook.  No silk in my closet (I really wanted a silk piece!).

5.  Be flexible.  I really wanted a pair of those cute sandal clogs that are really big right now, but most of the places that I looked were too expensive, so I opted to wait until I can find a reasonably priced pair (if you know of any place, let me know!). It is my capsule wardrobe, so I feel like if I want to add an item, I totally can! I am not planning on adding anything besides that, but if I wanted to, I could.

Have you tried out a capsule wardrobe?  What did you think?  Do you have any suggestions of things you learned?

Pattern mixing

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Don't you just love all the pattern mixing that is going on right now! I figured I would jump on that band wagon. Here are 3 examples of pattern mixing from my closet! Not revolutionary perhaps, but I tried out a few different looks just for you! I am kind of obsessed with the outfit on the left (also featured here). I was absurdly happy that I have 3 different prints in the same outfit. Sometimes, it's the little things... I also had to make a conscious effort not to wear a skirt in all three of these photos. It's like I can't pattern mix without a print skirt. Or I just can't not wear a skirt in a blog post.
I also don't know if you could get much whiter than my face in these photos... Yikes!
Happy Thursday!

Sisters Share It All: 10 wardrobe Staples (Part 1)

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

For this round of Sisters Share It All, we decided to do a post about ten staples to have in your closet. This doesn't include any accessories, but we hope to have a follow-up post on accessories later! I have actually thought a lot about this kind of thing in the past, and even got so far as taking all the pictures of the clothing that I felt like I need or love having in my own closet... but then I never got around to posting about it, what with the holidays upon us and all. So now, I have the opportunity to share some things that I feel like I need to have in my closet, and where I have or would buy them! Enjoy the excess of links!

1. Good fitting jeans - it is tough to say who sells the best jeans because everyone has different needs in a pair of jeans, as well as jeans never being a one size fits all type of clothing item. Personally, I like Joe's jeans quite a bit, and have found them for a good price. I also have owned at least one and possibly two pairs of DKNY pants from Ross that have made me quite happy in fit and overall quality. I don't think it matters much what type of jeans you wear as long as you they fit you properly and you feel great in them. And, I don't think you have to pay an arm and a leg to get a proper fitting, good quality pair. This pair might be worth the price though, if they looked half as fabulous on me as they do on the model.

2. Solid or striped tee for layering - this became a real staple when I worked at Anthropologie. I love wearing a jacket with it, a fun printed scarf or both. A few options are here, and here .

3. Blouse - I almost bought this at H&M last weekend. I love the details (I am still considering going back to get it!). I also love this dress shirt from H&M and have it in two different colors. See one of them here. The fit on this shirt is quite excellent!

4. Pencil Skirt - I have one from J.Crew that I love and think this one has a nice looking fit and comes in pretty colors!

5. Dress - This dress is inexpensive and has a pretty cut to it. I also love this.

6. Button-down cardigan - I have a number of these in various colors and styles. I love how well they layer and how they can dress up an outfit in an instant with a scarf or necklace. I have this darling one from J. Crew in orange.

7. Pants - Disclaimer: I don't actually wear very many pants that are not jeans. If I were to wear pants other than jeans, they would probably be these, or these. Or slim fitting white pants.

8. Blazer or structured jacket - I like this one or for something a little more adventurous, this one (I actually got this one for Christmas and am thus biased, but it does look great on! Better than in the photo).

9. Flats - A sophisticated pair, an everyday pair (Janssen has these in red and they are darling!), a marbled pair, or a slightly sparkly pair (I love a good pair of mary-jane style shoes!).

10. Heels or wedges - Everyone should own and wear a good pair of heels. They don't have to be expensive to be beautiful. If you can do expensive, these are gorgeous, and these are so fun!

I don't know about you, but now I want to go shop!

Slouchy

Monday, November 19, 2012

I bought this new skirt at Forever 21 on Saturday when a friend and I went to the opening of H&M in Austin.  It was only $7.80, so I bought it in this color and the magenta and black.  I had this sweater from Janssen (given to her by someone else) that I was planning on altering, but after trying it on with this slim fitting skirt, I sort of love the slouchy look of it.  Happy Monday!
